Campus Ministers

The Campus Ministries Advisory Board

The Campus Ministries Advisory Board, convened by the University Chaplain, is composed of a team of religious professionals from the Baltimore community. It is a unique body of lay and ordained ministers, Rabbis and an Imam who are committed to the holistic development of Johns Hopkins University. They recognize that their mission is to minister to the spiritual, emotional and ethical journeys of the campus community. The Campus Ministers are a group of individuals devoted to a distinctive religious calling, dedicated to serving those in their own religious tradition, yet also called to engage the search for meaning in a challenging and competitive academic setting. Though they may claim beliefs different from one another, they stand together with conviction that their work and service at Johns Hopkins University enkindle respect for the integrity and dignity of each individual.

Meet our Faith Groups!

The word Om (also called Pranava) is comprised of three constituent sounds: “ah”, “u”, and “m”. These sounds mean respectively the Creator, Preserver, and Dissolver. In Sanskrit the sounds of vowels “a” and “u” combined together produce the sound that is equal to “o”. Therefore “(a + u) + m = o + m = Om. These three sounds imply, among many other things, the three Vedas and three divisions of the universe — the past, the present, and the future.  Each consistent sound in Om represents a large set of names of God. Therefore, by reciting Om we meditate upon many different attributes, manifestations, and powers of God. Om is considered the best name of God.
